May’s Record Club: 2 TONE RECORDS

GRC_2Tone_May2018

Glossop Record Club is back on Thursday 10th May for a session dedicated to 2 Tone Records.

Short-lived but hugely influential, the label was started by Specials keyboard player Jerry Dammers in 1979. Inspired by labels such as Tamla Motown and Stax , it released not just music by his own band but also other bands on the late 70s Coventry scene and beyond, who fused reggae, ska and punk.

Our guide for the evening will be 2 Tone completist John Walmsley, who will be winding the clock back to 1979 and picking out choice cuts from the label’s impressive run of 32 singles and 13 albums.

See you there!

An Evening with David Hepworth: podcast and photos

dhteamgrc

It was our great pleasure to welcome David Hepworth as our guest on April 19th. Gavin Hogg was our host with the most, and steered David through a range of topics relating to his books, Whistle Test, Live Aid and of course Smash Hits. Add to that the Q&A (Benny Hill, Top Of The Pops and Van Morrison all got a look in there) plus a few records, it was a very entertaining evening. David was even presented a record from Beany by the Hepworth Band, a platter we’re sure he’ll treasure from this day forth (see David’s tweet about it below).

A big thank you to Lyn (door and photos) and to Steve (book stall and roadie) for their invaluable assistance on the night. If you want to find out more about George Street Community Bookshop and maybe even get involved, check out their Facebook page.

Stream the talk here, click the player below or download (minus music) here.

We’ll be back on Thursday 10th May for a session dedicated to 2 Tone Records with John Walmsley. Details soon.
