OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED – music played

montage

With a multitude of formats – 7″, 12″, CD, cassette, even streaming from a phone – and armed with photos, press clippings, gig posters and set lists, it was a record club session like no other. All the music played was made by the people there. And my! What a talented bunch!

It was great to hear not only the music, but also hear the stories behind the songs, how bands were formed and evolved, how songs were written and recorded and what became of those bands. Tales of euphoria and disappointment with no inbetween. For one night we came together, shared our dreams and remembered when opportunity knocked.

Listen to highlights here or click the player at the bottom of this post.

Also in the ‘music played’ list below are links to listen and/or buy/download some of the music played.

Huge thanks to Scott, Mark, Paul, Aidan, Steve M, Lyn, Matt, Gavin, Martin, Darren, Steve R, Jim and Scotty for bringing the tunes and telling their stories. And thanks to everyone else for coming and listening.

The dream is never over!

Very enjoyable night and me picking up the wrong tape meant you didn’t get to hear my vocals on the Crying Shame demo – win/win

What a brilliant mix of music & anecdotes!

Don’t forget, no record club in August but we’ll be back on Thursday 14th September for The Sounds of 1967. See you then!

July’s Record Club: OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED

GRCOpportunityKnocked

You may not know it, but Glossop Record Club is a hotbed of musical talent. We’re not talking about the records that we listen to each month. No. We’re talking about the folk who bring the records!

It turns out many of us have been in bands or made music over the years. And many still do. Glossop is the hometown of C86 and Creation Records legends The Bodines and the recently reformed purveyors of power pop The Trend, not to mention Steve Roberts, Quiet Loner, Shield Patterns, Rhys Bloodjoy and Stickboy among others. Plus there are our friends from further afield like Lippy Kid.

So if you’ve ever been in a band or made your own music, recorded a demo, self-released a single or album or even landed a record deal, this night is for you!

If you have some sort of recorded evidence of your musical endeavours, dig them out to share at this special record club session (along with any photos, posters or other mementoes you might have) and tell us about the time ‘Opportunity Knocked’.

We’ll try and cater for all formats – vinyl, cassette, mini disc and for one night only… CD!!! But so I know what to expect – and if you have any unusual formats – please let me know in the ‘format chooser’ below what you’ll be bringing, and get in touch if it’s some weird format.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED
