February’s Record Club: SINGLES NIGHT – Three of the best

grcsinglesnight2018

Glossop Record Club is back on Thursday 8th February for our first session of 2018. And it’s the return of Singles Night!

As this will be our third singles-only session, we’re making it three of the best – three songs of your choosing, so long as they’re on 7″ and revolve at 45rpm.

From rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s; The Beatles, The Stones, Mod, Motown and Stax in the 60s; Glam, Punk and New Wave in the 70s; Factory, Rough Trade and 4AD in the 80s; to Sub Pop and Britpop in the 90. All these musical revolutions turned at 45, so bring yourself, bring your singles. And share the love of vinyl.

One final reminder… Don’t come looking for love, it’s not that kind of singles night!

Happy New Year!

grc2017montage

A big thanks to you all for making 2017 another fantastic year at Glossop Record Club. Once again, with your help and involvement, we’ve covered a huge array of genres, eras and artists, playing full albums alongside singles and choice LP cuts, digging deep, sharing stories and uncovering many gems along the way.

If you want to listen back to highlights of this year’s sessions, they’re all here on Mixcloud, including Darren and Tom’s best of 2017, Bernie’s girl groups selections and not forgetting our own original music as played at Opportunity Knocked. As ever, the music is only half the story but it’s what brings us together each month. If you want the full story, you gotta be there! You can also listen back to our one-off live radio show which acted as a substitute when we were usurped by the general election. Pah.

There’s lots to look forward to in the coming year too including a special session to celebrate our 5th birthday in September! January’s session has been postponed, so our first gathering of 2018 will be on Thursday 8th February and the return of Singles Night. Full details nearer the time.

Happy New Year! See you in February.

Record Club Round-Up

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at GRC HQ. Here’s a quick round-up of recent happenings.

Hi-Fi Choice feature

The latest edition of Hi-Fi Choice magazine (March 2014) includes a three-page feature on Glossop Record Club, following a visit by one of their writers to the Lucky Dip session back in December. Available from larger newsagents and online.

On ‘The Chain’

Amazingly, and after many failed attempts over the years, I finally made it onto Radcliffe & Maconie’s long-running feature ‘The Chain’ on BBC 6 Music (Monday 10th February). I couldn’t pass up the chance to mention the record club, and Stuart Maconie asked quite a lot of questions about it. I felt like I was on there for ages! The clip is on Soundcloud if you want to hear it.

Singles Night

Our February session was last week. Read all about it here and also listen to ‘digital highlights’ here.

Mailing List

Finally, I’ve set up a mailing list for updates such as the above and for the stuff people may miss on Twitter and Facebook. Sign up here. I promise I won’t flood your inbox with needless rubbish. Honest!

February’s Record Club: SINGLES NIGHT

SinglesNightA4

Sometimes, rules are there to be broken. Or at the very least respectfully ignored…

Usually at Glossop Record Club, we ‘listen to albums, on vinyl, in full’ (as the slogan goes). But, on Thursday 13th February, the evening will revolve at 45 RPM, as we turn our attention to the single (and its close cousin the EP) of all vinyl shapes, sizes and colours… 7″, 12″, coloured vinyl, picture disc… We’ll even have the technology to play precious 78s.

colour  12s  70s

Taking pride of place alongside the usual record club hi-fi will be a fully-working early 1960s Dansette RG31, on which we’ll stack up some vintage 45s and play ‘Dansette Roulette’, a little game that involves watching the records drop down on top of each other and finding out which ones will play, and which ones will slip and slide. It’s great fun! The Dansette is also equipped with a stylus suitable for 78s if anyone wishes to share the shellac.

From rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s; The Beatles, The Stones, Mod, Motown and Stax in the 60s; Glam, Punk, New Wave and 2 Tone in the 70s; Factory, Rough Trade and 4AD in the 80s; to Sub Pop and Britpop in the 90s… get digging through your 45s and bring some with you.

Doors open at 8pm, and from 8.30, the session will be broken into 20 minute chunks, so if you fancy claiming one of these chunks to spin some of your favourite singles and maybe talk about them, get in touch (via Twitter, Facebook or the comments section below). I’ll be devoting my slot to 1960s b sides and non-album tracks (plus making good use of the Dansette).

But if you’ve just got a couple of things you want to play and not talk about, that’s fine. Just bring the records with you on the night and if needs be, elbow your way to the deck.

Finally, we’ll end the evening by listening to one of three classic singles collections (all that getting up and down and changing records might get a bit too much). Either Buzzcocks ‘Singles Going Steady’, The Cure ‘Standing On A Beach’ or Squeeze ‘Singles 45s And Under’. No online poll this time, we’ll make a call on it on the night.

I hope you can join us for what promises to be an eclectic and entertaining evening of music, all in celebration of the single.

One final note… Don’t come looking for love, it’s not that kind of singles night!
