Thanks to everyone who braved Storm Callum and ventured out for our Aretha Franklin tribute session. Special thanks also to Steve McNamee for great records and stories. Pure joy from start to finish! A full list of records played is below, along with links to listen to a selection of those records.

@GlossopRecord another top night, listening to Aretha Franklin. Always amazed at how much knowledge there is in the room. Thanks to @SteveMcVinyl and @simongmusic73. Only heard the classic Aretha songs before the live album stuff was ace.

It was a joy to hear Aretha letting rip at full volume through the big speakers at @GlossopRecord last night. If her ecstatic screaming on Mary Don’t You Weep doesn’t get your spine tingling then you’d better check your pulse.

As always it was a great night especially with the edition of Smashy and Nicey. Some fantastic songs played. Thanks Steve and Simon.

Never thought I’d hear myself say that a live gospel album was my favourite part of the evening. As usual, enjoyable and educational in equal measures, Thanks @SteveMcVinyl and @simongmusic73

Great night thanks Simon! Powerful choice & range of records from the wonderful Aretha, loved it!

We’re back on Thursday 8th November for 1968: Vinyl Revolutions, full details on that soon.

October’s Record Club: R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aretha Franklin

GRC_ArethaFranklin_final3.jpg

On Thursday 11th October we pay R.E.S.P.E.C.T. to Aretha Franklin with a whole night of the Queen of Soul on vinyl, concentrating on her late 60s/early 70s Atlantic Records purple patch when she was absolutely at the top of her game.

We’ll be playing Aretha’s classic 1967 album ‘I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You‘ in full, which, alongside the title track also includes Respect and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man. An absolute stormer from start to finish. We’ll also play a side each of her essential live albums – ‘Amazing Grace‘ and ‘Aretha Live at Fillmore West‘ – which capture Aretha in her element, delivering some truly astonishing performances. We’ll also have time to slip in some of her essential 45s and album cuts along the way.

It’s all happening at Glossop Labour Club. Doors open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and it’s free admission. See you there.
