R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aretha Franklin – Records Played

arethavinyl

Thanks to everyone who braved Storm Callum and ventured out for our Aretha Franklin tribute session. Special thanks also to Steve McNamee for great records and stories. Pure joy from start to finish! A full list of records played is below, along with links to listen to a selection of those records.

@GlossopRecord another top night, listening to Aretha Franklin. Always amazed at how much knowledge there is in the room. Thanks to @SteveMcVinyl and @simongmusic73. Only heard the classic Aretha songs before the live album stuff was ace.

It was a joy to hear Aretha letting rip at full volume through the big speakers at @GlossopRecord last night. If her ecstatic screaming on Mary Don’t You Weep doesn’t get your spine tingling then you’d better check your pulse.

As always it was a great night especially with the edition of Smashy and Nicey. Some fantastic songs played. Thanks Steve and Simon.

Never thought I’d hear myself say that a live gospel album was my favourite part of the evening. As usual, enjoyable and educational in equal measures, Thanks @SteveMcVinyl and @simongmusic73

Great night thanks Simon! Powerful choice & range of records from the wonderful Aretha, loved it!

We’re back on Thursday 8th November for 1968: Vinyl Revolutions, full details on that soon.

Also, another date for your diary! We’ll be at the Crystal Ballroom, Norfolk Street on Saturday 29th December for RIP IT UP, our end-of-year retro disco, spinning a heady mix of Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Girl Groups, Ska, Psych, Glam, Funk, Disco, New Wave, Synth Pop, Indie and more. THE SECRET SONGS OF DAVID BOWIE – records played

dbgrcglc

It was a packed labour club for our fifth anniversary session, as we dug deep and delved into the forgotten and seldom-heard corners of David Bowie’s long and productive career, playing live tracks, radio sessions, demos and outtakes to show another face of the Dame. We also played probably the most valuable record ever to grace to the record club turntable, Bowie’s 1970 flop single ‘The Prettiest Star’, which was quite a special moment (for your host anyway). My thanks to Beany for very kindly bringing that in to share with us all. And thanks to everyone who came along.

We’ll be back on Thursday 11th October for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Aretha Franklin, a whole night of the Queen Of Soul on vinyl. It’s going to be a special one. Details soon.
