April’s Record Club: TALK TALK’S SPIRIT OF EDEN

GRC TalkTalk.jpg

We’re back on Thursday 11th April with Gavin Hogg at the helm to play what is considered to be one of the greatest albums of the 1980s on vinyl and in full – Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit Of Eden’ – along with a selection of cuts from their other albums. It’s a record we’ve wanted to play for quite some time, and following the recent death of the band’s vocalist and songwriter, Mark Hollis, we thought this would make a fitting tribute to a very distinctive and singular voice.

A year in the making, the album was released in 1988 to a rather muted response, but over time it’s reputation has grown and it’s now considered a classic, hugely influential on many bands and artists including Doves, Elbow and Wild Beasts among others.

Writing for The Guardian following Mark Hollis’s death, Jude Rogers described the album as a “long, meditative, immersive experience – extended journeys into the possibilities of ambient sound, influenced not by what surrounded their makers, but by the spaces between; of the improvised nature of jazz and modern classical composition, as well as strange, oblique poetry.” Read the full piece here. Also worth reading is this piece on The Quietus.

Doors open at 8pm, music starts 8.30pm. We hope to see you there.
